The best way to start the Sim Racing hobby in this price category is a sim racing starter kit from Logitech or Thrustmaster. Especially on console this is a great starting point.

When starting in this price category i would suggest to buy used to safe some money and get a taste of the hobby. You can get the equipment for about half the price and if don't commit to the hobby you can resell it for the same price.

For the Logitech G29 and G923/G920 there are two versions available. Make sure to select the right one for your console.

About this equipment: ​

This category is ideal for beginners who want to start sim racing on console. If you don't know if you want to commit to the hobby long-term or are on a tight budget start here. The gear is affordable but still provides a good racing experience. In this category the wheel is directly attached to the wheelbase and cannot be changed. The kits also includes a beginner pedal set. The wheelbase provides force feedback off up to ~2.5 Nm using a belt driven system. 2.5 Nm provides some steering resistance and cornering forces to feel weights shifts of the car and road texture. It is enough to learn a great racing technique and have a lot of fun in this hobby.

If you opt for this category I would strongly suggest buying a used set. You can easily find a good used kit on ebay, facebook or other marketplaces and resell them if you don’t use them enough. If you don’t want to buy used, I would go for the next price category since the price increase buying a new one is minor in comparison to the upgrade in feeling and realism.

I would mainly suggest the G29 from Logitech over the T300 of Thrustmaster because Logitech is slightly cheaper. In terms of feeling, force feedback strength and build quality the G29 and the T300 are very similar. If you see a used set of the T300 that is cheaper then a used set of the G29 you can easily opt for the T300.

​To elevate your sim racing experience, investing in the right additional equipment can make a significant difference in immersion, comfort and performance. Beyond the essential components like a wheelbase, steering wheel, and pedals, a thoughtful decision about your cockpit- and display-setup can bring you closer to the feel of real racing.​

When starting out with Sim Racing the simplest and cheapest option is to mount your wheel directly to your office desk. When playing on Console this is more often than not, not an option because your console is hooked up to your TV and a suitable table for Sim Racing in front of your TV is not available. 

Thus the best beginner setups for console players  are either a wheelstand or a foldable cockpit.

 

A Wheelstand offers a mounting both for your wheelbase and your pedals. Preventing the pedals from moving is the biggest benefit here. Another benefit for you could be that you can move your setup easily around. However a Wheelstand takes up space when not in use and you have to use a separate chair to drive. While a Wheelstand provides a stable mounting solution the upright seating position is far from being realistic and comfortable.

A foldable cockpit, on the other hand, provides a more realistic and comfortable seating position with an integrated seat and mounting points for the wheel and pedals. This makes longer racing sessions more enjoyable while still being space-saving due to its collapsible design.

 

Since many beginners do not yet have a dedicated sim racing setup, these two options offer the best balance between affordability and improved racing experience. While a wheelstand provides flexibility and easy storage, a foldable cockpit enhances ergonomics and immersion—especially when paired with a large TV or VR headset.​​​
